We are the ALTOS!

The alto section is one of 11 outstanding and unique sections that is found within the University of Minnesota Marching Band that, while marching as one, is known simply as the 'Pride of Minnesota.' As one single entity, we are always referred to as the "crown jewel" of the U of M by our director, Dr. Tim Diem. However, there can be no doubt that each section in their own right, brings something special to the overall tradition, spirit, and pageantry of the Marching Band-and the altos are definitely no exception.

What makes the alto section stand out from the rest? For one thing, the alto section happens to be the second largest section within the ensemble with 35 members. Although labeled as a woodwind, the altos can project as much sound as any brass section making the alto contribution to sound and style invaluable for the band. Another feature the alto section possesses is a strong marching style. As a Big Ten band, the high-step marching style is taken very seriously, especially with the altos. All these distinct elements allow for the alto section to be one of the most recognized and admired sections both on and off the field and stage.

Of course, visiblility, sound, and movement tell only half the story about who the altos are. Within the section are dedicated veterans and enthusiastic rookies fronted by outstanding student leaders coming together to be a part of something that is huger than our own individual selves. Although this ideology governs the entire band, it is the fond memories forged in the process of learning, teamwork, and comaraderie that have transformed the alto section into what they are today. And they have fun doing it!

Even within the external and internal affairs of the band, an alto presence can be felt. With representation in all three athletic bands, alto pride is always there to cheer our on Golden Gopher sports teams and help rally our fans to victory. The altos also have great representation in the honorary band fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi, and sorority, Tau Beta Sigma, which do amazing work for the University Bands. Since 2004, the altos have had the honor of being represented by one of their very own on the Property Staff. For the 2008 season, Dan Baumeister will take on the duties of Property Manager along with Eric Kunde from the baritone section.

As you can see, many things make the altos a wonderful section full of dedication and excitement. The University of Minnesota Altos are dedicated to preserving TRADITION by being true to their origins; taking PRIDE in all University of Minnesota functions; and maintaining a high level of EXCELLENCE to ensure a unified and successful section.

Special 'Thanks' to Dan Baumeister for contributing to this page.
